Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2012
August 19th, 2012

The winner of the 62nd Pebble Beach Concours d"Elegance: 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo with coachwork by Saoutchik.

The 62th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2012 - the most prestigious classic car event in the world. This year featured the automobiles of the Maharajas , Mercer Raceabouts, Mercedes-Benz SLs, the designs of Jaques Saoutchik, Shelby Cobras, American Sport Customs, German Motorcycles and a celebration of Sergio Pininfarina.

Concept and Prototype Display

Over the years, the Pebble Beach Concours d"Elegance ' Concept Exhibit ' evolved into the premier showcase for manufacturers of luxury and exotic automobiles to present their latest design concepts and new models. An international audience of unparalleled connoisseurship previews the beauty and lineage of the most important marques in the history of the horseless carriage.

Lamborghini brought a different kind of concept vehicle to the display at Pebble Beach - the SUV Urus. Deriving from another member of the family of bulls, the Urus - also known as Aurochs and one of the large and wild ancestors of domestic cattle - seems to be an appropriate name for an Offroader with an output of 600 hp and 24-inch double-spoke wheels. Truly - this is the Lamborghini of SUVs.
This is more like a Lamborghini as one would expect: the Sesto Elemento - referring to the ' sixth element ' in the periodic table, carbon - and featuring not only a carbon fiber body, but also a newly developed matte clear coat to display the structure underneath. The result is a curb weight of only 2,202 pounds, which enables the 570 hp producing V10 engine to accelerate the Sesto Elemento in a mere 2.5 seconds to 62 mph.

Aston Martin presented the latest version of it's Vanquish - inspired by the One-77 supercar - and made of carbon fiber. The 6.0 liter V12 engine boosts 656 bhp and 457 lb-ft of torque - mated to a newly tuned six-speed automatic transmission.
Mercedes-Benz showcased a four-door coupe concept with the name Concept Style Coupe. Technical highlights include all-wheel drive 4MATIC system, a new four-cylinder turbo-charged gasoline engine and 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.
' Hennessey ' might be known only to a very small circle of enthusiasts yet - but the 2013 Venom GT Spyder is the most powerful roadster in the world today. 1,244 bhp out of a 7.0 liter, twin turbocharged V8 deliver an acceleration of 15.3 seconds - from zero to 200mph(!) - making it hard to ever spot one on the road. But also standing still it will remain a rare sighting in the years to come - the production will be limited to only five cars per model and twenty-nine in total.
McLaren - by contrast needs no introduction - it is one of the long standing super car brands going back to the M6 GT from 1968 and the famed F1 from the Nineties. Making its world debut at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is the 12C Spider - featuring a 3.8 liter V8 twin turbo engine with an output of 616 bhp. Given the low weight of the one-piece carbon MonoCell chassis of only 165 pounds, it delivers acceleration of 3.2 - or 3.0 with the Corsa tire option - seconds to 60 mph.
